IN-SIGHT
In-Sight is a sensor laden molly bolt that monitors the places you cannot see.
The majority of IoT devices
pay attention to solved problems like lightswitches and locks. None have
ventured inside the walls where leaks, shorts, mold, and infestation present the greatest risks.
Use In-Sight to hang a picture
or TV, and immediately know the health of that wall.

This concept was developed for O'Reilly's Solid Conference 2015. All rights reserved.

The In-Sight molly bolt is installed by drilling a 3/4" hole in drywall. It is then inserted into the wall, and the hex screw is turned until the arms are fully open and grasp the drywall.
Once open, the web-like rectenna opens to collect ambient power from WiFi and other radio signals.
To conserve power, it periodically checks its sensors when it has received enough power to collect and send a packet of data. As such, the device's useful life is no longer tied to a battery.
